Research Abstract

In October 1999, a team of 13 researchers from the Physics and Computer Science departments of Miskatonic University led by Prof. Kyle August spelunked deep into an unmapped cave system to conduct remote experiments with sophisticated equipment. The team was never heard from again, although the extended search and rescue did find their last base camp in a cave system called Taylor Run. Media and tabloid coverage quickly dubbed the event "the Miskatonic Massacre" and fueled rampant speculation about potential cult involvement. One Miskatonic CS graduate student, Howard Philips, was replaced from the expedition team at the last minute due to an injury: two of his thesis advisors, several of his fellow graduate students, and his girlfriend Adrianna Solovine end up among the missing.

Speculation

Dr. Elizabeth Riley's work implies that the expedition had something to do with the anomalous signal known as "The Scream" responsible for a mysterious telescope collapse 11 years earlier. Suspicion continues to surround the spelunking guides such as Ms. Solovine, who were not part of the Miskatonic community. Strangely, the Lucky 5 malware treats 10-31-99 as a key zero-point date in all its calculations, suggesting a potential connection or interest in the event by the Chorazos Cult.
